5 Essential Tips for Feeding Show Cattle

Having a proper nutrition program for your show cattle can set you apart in your success in the ring. Here are 5 tips to help you maximize the potential of your show cattle’s nutritional health.

  1. BE CONSISTENT

Just like in everything you do, consistency is key. Feeding your cattle around the same time of day and the same quantity each day plays an important role in the overall health of your animal. Cattle are creatures of habit so keeping their routine very similar each day can help maximize their nutritional potential. It is also very important to always provide clean, fresh water to your cattle that is easily accessible to them.

  1. HAVE A FEEDING BUDDY

Just like humans, your cattle need companionship. Research shows that cattle actually eat better with other cattle alongside them. However, keep in mind some cattle are slower eaters than others so feeding them individually is a good idea when ensuring they are getting the right amount each feeding period. Feed them individually but close enough to where they don’t feel alone.

  1. EVALUTE THE QUALITY OF YOUR FEED PRODUCT LINE

Often times it is said, you can buy cattle with good genetics but you have to raise them to be a champion and that starts by choosing the best nutritional program for your animal. Quality cattle deserve quality feed. There is more to just looking at the ingredients when it comes to selecting your show feed. Understanding what goes into making your feed, the consistency and the expertise that comes along with it is crucial. Having a team of professionals work with you can help reassure you’re not on your own when feeding your livestock.

  1. RECORD YOUR PROGRESS

Although many may have their nutritional program written perfectly on paper. It is important we are keeping track of the results of our animal. Keeping records on your cattle can help with the advancement in your nutrition program. The best way to do that is by weighing your cattle often, if you have access to a scale each week. Not all cattle respond to feed in the same way and it is necessary to make changes when needed. That is why it is important to have individualized plans for each animal. Every animal is different and there is not just one solution that fits each scenario.

  1. KNOW YOUR END GOAL

It is important to have a strategy in place when feeding your cattle. Most show cattle are fed for a specific date targeting a certain weight. Come up with a step-by-step plan in how you are going to manage your cattle to reach your goal. Determine what you want that to be and then feed what you need to get there. Note that you may have to make adjustments along the way. This plan needs to begin once you start feeding your calf.
